Meeting Description:

Considering discourse and language as two fundamental categories for contemporary cultural theory, this seminar will explore how discourse analysis may disentangle the role of language in the constitution of cultural practices.  Contributions may focus on questions like identity construction, representation, cultural consumption and regulation, the articulation of power relations, and the interaction of such variables with globalization, gender, ethnicity, class, etc.  Both practical case studies and theoretical contributions will be welcomed from a wide range of fields including, but not being limited to, critical discourse analysis, language and gender, discourse psychology, ethnography of communication, pragmatics, media and communication studies, etc.

Meeting Description:

THE 19TH ANNUAL MEETING of the Language Origins Society (LOS) and the first meeting of the Psychiatric Brain and Language Research Society (PBLRS) will be held jointly August 24 through 27, 2006 in Barga (LU), Italy.The title of the PBLRS meeting is 'Cognitive and Language Impairments in Bipolar Disorders and Psychoses: The Speciation of Homo Sapiens and Mental Illness.' The LOS program will include a selection of papers on all aspects of the origins and evolution of spoken, written, and signed languages.  The invited LOS speaker is Francesco d'Errico, Institut de Préhistoire et de Géologie du Quaternaire of the University of Bordeaux. 

ABSTRACTS: Those who wish to present a paper or a poster should submit their abstracts no later than April 20, 2006. Membership in the LOS or PBLRS is not a prerequisite. Abstracts should be no more than 500-word long, be in Word format and sent as e-mail attachment. Authors are kindly asked to specify whether they wish to make an oral or a poster presentation. 

-LOS abstracts of Language Origins papers should be sent to Dr. Dominique Nouveau at D.Nouveau at let.ru.nl. 

-PBLR abstracts should be mailed to: Dr. Mario Betti (tibet54 at alice.it) and CCed to Dr. Giancarlo Buoiano (g.buoiano at ling.unipi.it) and Dr. Siham Bouanani (siham.bouanani at tin.it).

PROCEEDINGS: The organizers (Mario Betti, Giancarlo Buoiano and Bernard Bichakjian) are investigating the possibility of publishing, after review, the PBLRS and LOS papers in a special issue of Schizophrenia Research or Schizophrenia Bulletin.
