Meeting Description:

The Linguistic Society of Southern Africa (LSSA) and the Southern African Applied Linguistics Association (SAALA) are two scholarly societies of linguists whose research foci are the languages of the Southern African region (where "southern" refers more to linguistic borders than geographic ones). These societies promote and co-ordinate the research, study and teaching of general and applied linguistics by means of the publication of an accredited journal and the organisation of an annual conference, which provides an opportunity for an exchange of ideas and for mutual stimulus to researchers in the field of language studies. The theme of the 2006 conference to be held in Durban is 'Language Variation in Changing Contexts'. 

Abstracts are invited for papers in all areas of Linguistics including, but not limited to, the following themes:

- Language variation and language change through language contact
- The emergence of new varieties, dialects and languages
- Code switching and language variation
- Representation and structure in individual languages 
- Syntactic change
- Multilingualism in the individual and in society
- Linguistic systems and cognitive categories 
- Language planning and language politics
- Language in education
 
Important Dates
Abstract Deadline: 	   	 15 March 2006	
Notification of Acceptance:  	                   7 April 2006
Registration Deadline: 	      	   1 June 2006
Registration Fees:
before 31 March 2006: R 780.00 per person            	    
after 31 March 2006: R 840.00 per person

Cancellations before 1 June 2006 will qualify for a refund less 15% administration fee.

There will be no refund of registration fees for cancellations made after 1 June 2006.

Conference Languages:
The preferred language for presentations is English. 

Abstracts:
All abstracts must be typed in English, using Ms Word and single line spacing, Arial font, 12 point/10 pitch. Only abstracts not exceeding 600 words and submitted in electronic format will be considered. All abstracts must contain a title and the author's name and affiliation. They must be emailed to

Format:
Indicate your preference for the format of presentation (oral or poster). The Committee reserves the right to alter the author's request if necessary.

Oral Presentations:
Oral presentations will be restricted to 20 minutes for presentations and 10 minutes for discussion.

Posters:
Posters will be limited in size to 0.9 x 0.7 metre. Time will be set aside in the programme for poster presentations.

Meeting Description:

The Pacific Second Language Research Forum is a venue for data-based and theoretical papers on areas of basic research in Second Language Acquisition (SLA). 

The deadline for abstract submissions to PacSLRF 2006 is approaching. 

Proposals for papers and colloquia presenting data and theory in areas of basic research in Second Language Acquisition are invited. Categories include: Bilingualism, Child SLA, classroom cognitive approaches, lexicon/vocabulary, morphology, generative approaches to SLA, multilingualism, oral discourse, phonology/phonetics, pragmatics, reading, research methodology, sociocultural approaches, sociolinguistic approaches, syntax, CALL, testing and written discourse.

The deadline for submissions is 15th January 2006.

Presentations can take two forms:

INDIVIDUAL PAPERS will be allotted 30 minutes (20 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion). Submission includes in the following order: 
1.Title of the presentation (maximum twenty words. 
2.Presenter contact info: last name, first name, department, affiliation, mailing address (incl. city, state/prov, zip/postal code), country, phone, and e-mail address. 
3.50-word (maximum) single-spaced summary of the paper. 
4.300-word (maximum) single-spaced abstract of the paper. 
5.The area of your paper (choose one category only). 

DISSERTATION WORK-IN-PROGRESS
Graduate students interested in presenting a paper in this stream will be allotted to 30 minutes (20 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion). Experts in your field will be invited to attend your session and provide comments on your work. Submission includes in the following order.
1.Title of the presentation (maximum twenty words) 
2.Presenter contact info: last name, first name, department, affiliation, mailing address (incl. city, state/prov, zip/postal code), country, phone, and e-mail address. 
3.50-word (maximum) single-spaced summary of the paper. 
4.300-word (maximum) single-spaced abstract of the paper.
