The Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) is the research institute of
linguistics at the Faculty of Arts, Leiden University. LUCL coordinates the
research of ca. 60 permanent faculty, 50 PhD students and 30 postdocs. It runs
the internationally-oriented two-year Research MA programme 'Structure and
variation in the languages of the world' and organises numerous conferences,
workshops and other scientific events every year.

LUCL has positions for eight paid PhD students (starting date 1 September 2006),
in the following areas:

Application number (6-005): 4 PhD students (AIO positions, scholarships for
non-EC citizens) for research in any field of linguistics. In particular,
applications in the fields of descriptive linguistics, formal linguistics,
language use and language variation (either diachronic or synchronic) are invited.

Application number (6-006): 2 PhD students (AIO positions) for the Vici-project
'The codifiers and the English language: Tracing the norms of Standard English',
funded by NWO (Principal investigator: Dr. Ingrid Tieken-Boon van Ostade).
Applications are invited for the subprojects 'Priestley's descriptivism' and
'Lindley Murray, Quaker grammarian'. Note: no research proposal is necessary;

'Degrees across categories', funded by NWO (Principal investigator: Dr. Jenny
