I am researching the relationship between the structure of the emotion
clause and that of the perception clause crosslinguistically. Many
languages model their clause structure of emotion expressions on perception
sentences (or vice versa) because both emotion and perception involve the
'mind-to-the world' fit (Searle 1983), as in English:

John is looking at the paper. (perception)
John is being mad at Harry. (emotion)

Or in Cebuano:

Nag-tan'aw si Juan kang Pedro. (perception)
AF-look SI PN Obl PN
'Juan is looking at Pedro.' 

Na-suko' si Juan kang Pedro. (emotion)
AF-be.angry SI PN Obl PN
'Juan is angry with Pedro.'

Or in Japanese:

Watashi wa kare ga urayamashii (emotion)
I TOP s/he Nom admire
'I admire him.'

Watashi wa kare o okotte-iru (emotion)
I TOP s/he ACC angry-Prog
'I am mad at him.'

John wa Mary o mite-iru (perception)
PN TOP PN ACC look-Prog
'John is looking at Mary.'

John ni Mary ga mie-ta (perception)
PN DAT PN NOM see-Past
'John saw Mary.'

But there are also other languages where the emotion clause structure
pursues an independent path unrelated to the structure of perception
sentences. In Atayal, a Formosan language, perception is expressed via
either the locative focus construction or the Agent focus construction, but
it structures its emotion expression in terms of the language-particular
applicative construction:

s-tlequn ni' yumin qu' ciwas
App-mad GEN PN NOM PN
'Yumin is mad at Ciwas.'

Where s- is an instrument applicative marker and the genitive-marked NP is
the experiencer.

I would greatly appreciate it if anyone could point to any references or
sources that discuss this issue. Any other guidance on the issue would also
be appreciated.
