Meeting Description:

The Bantu-Romance Connection project aims to bring together specialists of Bantu and Romance languages to explore striking morpho-syntactic similarities  between these two unrelated language families, in an effort to better understand the nature of linguistic structure, its diversity and constraints.

Bantu and Romance languages display a number of morpho-syntactic similarities, including null subjects, object clitics, rich gender/class agreement systems, and extraposition of arguments resulting in a variety of surface word orders. Yet most scholars of Romance have little awareness of Bantu linguistic structures, and many Bantuists are not fully aware of the syntactic diversity of Romance languages. We would like to begin remeding this situation by proposing a 2-day workshop dedicated in equal parts to each language group. The format of the workshop will encourage debate as well as informal discussion between scholars.

A number of questions arise regarding the surface similarities found in these two language groups: Are the syntactic structures underlying these surface similarities really the same? or are they actually different, and how can we tell? What is the diversity of structures permitted in each of these domains, and how are they represented across these two language groups?

To address these questions, presentations and posters will be centred around three themes:

- The structure of the Determiner Phrase
- Clitics, agreement and object drop
- Focus, topic and Information Structure

We are pleased to announce the call for papers for ICCG4, which marks the fourth occasion on which researchers engaged in Construction Grammar, and the study of grammatical constructions in general, gather together from around the world. As in the past ICCGs, the main purpose of ICCG4 is to provide a forum for presenting construction-based research in its various models and applications. ICCG4 also aims to deepen our understanding of Frame Semantics, which is a twin brother of Construction Grammar. In addition, a special feature of ICCG4 is that we hope to promote mutual exchange of ideas between practitioners of Construction Grammar and Japanese scholars from various backgrounds who share a construction-based approach to language.

Abstracts for regular conference papers (20 min. talk plus 10 min. discussion) are invited on any aspect of linguistic analysis that is concerned with grammatical constructions and/or semantic frames. We welcome work on issues in syntax, morphology, semantics, pragmatics, discourse, language acquisition, corpus linguistics, language typology/change, etc. In addition, we are considering the possibility of having poster sessions. See 6-i below.

All abstracts (which must be in English) must be submitted electronically, as attachment files in PDF format, to the following address by February 1st (late submission will be considered until February 20):

The guidelines for abstract submission are as follows:
1. An author may submit at most one single or one joint abstract of which he/she is the principal author. It is, however, possible to combine presentation of an individual paper with (a) joint paper(s) of which he/she is not the principal author. In the case of joint authorship, the first author's address should be designated for communication with ICCG4.
2. In order that the abstracts be reviewed anonymously, authors should not include their names or otherwise reveal their identity anywhere on the abstract.
3. The length of each abstract should be approximately 500 words, not including references. In addition, authors may add figures, tables, and/or graphs. The total length of each abstract must be limited to two pages.
4. Abstracts must be formatted as Adobe Acrobat PDF files with the (principal) author's name as filename (in letters of the English alphabet only). In addition, please also submit the file in MS Word format at the same time if possible.
5. All abstracts must adhere to the following formatting specifications (a sample file is on the ICCG4 website).
  a. A4 size
  b. top margin: 45 mm (or 1.77'')
  c. top/left/right margin: 30 mm (or 1.18'')
  d. font: Times/Times New Roman or similar font in 12 point
  e. spacing:  single-space
6. The body of the e-mail message must contain the following information:
  a. paper title
  b. name(s) of author(s)
  c. affiliation(s) of author(s)
  d. e-mail address where notification of (non-)acceptance should be sent
  e. e-mail address for each author
  f. postal address of the principal author
  g. subfield(s) (e.g. syntax, phonology, etc.: in the case of multiple subfields, list in order of decreasing relevance)
  h. three key phrases (e.g., tense, aspect, argument structure, clause-combining, etc.)
  i. If you prefer to give a poster rather than a regular paper, please indicate this preference by writing ''POSTER IF POSSIBLE'' here.

Authors will be notified regarding acceptance by April 15, 2006.
