The University of Sheffield is the leading centre for the study of the history of linguistics in the UK and is proud to be hosting the 2006 annual conference of the Henry Sweet Society for the History of Linguistic Ideas.  The programme will encompass topics on the full range of periods and of linguistic thought and practice.

The Leslie Seiffert lecture will be delivered by Professor Peter Burke, Emeritus Professor of Cultural History at the University of Cambridge, on the subject of 'Social History of Language, Past, Present and Future'.
