Undergraduate conference in general linguistics to be held at Western Washington University and hosted by the WWU Linguistics Club.
The Western Washington University Linguistics Club and Linguistics Department are pleased to announce the second annual Western Washington University Undergraduate Conference in Linguistics, to be held May 20, 2006. Undergraduate students are invited to submit abstracts on any topic in linguistics; although preference will be given to undergraduates from the Northwestern region (WA, OR, ID, MT, and BC), all students (including graduate students if space allows) are invited to submit abstracts for consideration. Each presenter will have up to 15 minutes (with 5 minutes for questions) and the following are available during the presentation: PC (with MS Office, PowerPoint, etc., and A and D drives), Document Camera, overhead projector, and access to the Internet. There are hookups for connecting your own laptops (PC and Mac) if necessary.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is Monday, April 3rd, 2006. Notifications of acceptance will be e-mailed by April 14th. Abstracts (without your name written anywhere inside the document) should be typed on a single page (500 words or less), with an optional additional page for graphs and/or references, in .doc (MS Word) or .pdf (Adobe Acrobat) format with the following title: ''firstname_lastname_WWUUCL'' (example: john_smith_WWUUCL). Electronic submissions are required; if this is not possible, please contact Kristi Krein at linguisticsclubwwu at gmail.com to arrange a possible alternative.
All documents should be submitted to WWU Linguistics Club, Attn: WWUUCL, at linguisticsclubwwu at gmail.com by the April 3 deadline. In the body of your e-mail, please provide the following: Your full name, University, and Abstract title. The WWU Linguistics Club looks forward to your abstracts, and please go to the website http://www.linguistics.wwu.edu for up-to-date information concerning the conference.

This symposium will focus on research results on the processing, analysis and understanding of the linguistic characteristics of spontaneous speech. And it will also provide an excellent opportunity for linguists, speech engineers, and practitioners of natural language processing and system developers to share with each other the latest thinking and results on spontaneous speech. With no restriction on the languages under investigation, we are interested in contributions concerned with phenomena in all languages. Invited speakers of the symposium are Dafydd Gibbon, Kikuo Maekawa and Elizabeth Shriberg.
