Subject: Why Do We Need Your Help?
Dear subscribers,
Today begins the 2006 LINGUIST List Fund Drive. LINGUIST is a free service,
but it still costs money to run. In particular, it costs money to fund the
graduate students who staff all the LINGUIST services. As many of you know,
all of your donations go to fund assistantships for these students, and
through the years, you have supported nearly 60 M.A. students through their
degrees!
The current crew includes 18 students from 8 different countries. Many of
you know some of them already through interchanges about LINGUIST matters,
and you will be meeting all of them through their Fund Drive letters. This
year, the crew has also worked extra hard putting together one of our best
Fund Drives yet. Please refer to the message below from our Fund Drive
Coordinators to learn more about the exciting cruise they have organized,
which visits the hometown of each LINGUIST graduate student (and other
LINGUIST crew members). You can visit the cruise at
http://linguistlist.org/cruise.html .
We hope to entertain you with our cruise and at the same time convince you
that the LINGUIST graduate students are students whose intelligence and
enthusiasm for linguistics make them eminently worth funding.
Now, many of you have asked us over the years why it takes so many students
to run LINGUIST. First off-and you'll be hearing more about this-we need
students to maintain infrastructure facilities which may have been created
through grant funds but which are now up to the discipline (via LINGUIST)
to keep up. Day-to-day LINGUIST services also require many hands on the keys
because of decisions made at the beginning of LINGUIST. To help you understand
why we need each and every student we employ, we reviewed these decisions
in a letter during last year's Fund Drive, which you can view at
http://www.linguistlist.org/issues/16/16-862.html .
We hope you will feel that your donation is being put to good use, both in
providing for the continuation of LINGUIST and in providing for the future
of the profession. Certainly your support will be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
-Helen

All aboard the Fund Drive 2006 LINGUIST List Cruise!
For the sake of our users, we try to make each year's Fund Drive
different and exciting. This year, the LINGUIST graduate students
have gone the extra (nautical) mile and have organized a cruise
around the world of LINGUIST. We'd like to invite all of our users
on this cruise, which stops at the hometown of each member of the
LINGUIST crew.
When you visit the Cruise site, please feel free to explore our
"Captains' Quarters," from which you can access the different parts
of our cruise. You can read the Legend of the LINGUIST Sunset or
learn about the Linguist of the Day. You can visit our games and
activities page or view a list of the fabulous Fund Drive prizes
donated by publishers and subscribers. You can even watch a
performance by our Amazing Singing Waiter before visiting the crew's
Hometown Tours.
This year's Fund Drive is planned to run from March 17th to April 14th,
but you can help end it even sooner by making a donation to help us
reach our goal of $52,932! Remember, even a small donation really does
make a difference.
When you donate to LINGUIST, you can choose from a variety of stylish
premiums, including several new premiums created especially for Fund
Drive 2006. Plus, when you donate, you can take advantage of the
generous 35% percent discount on linguistics books offered by Continuum
for all donors and the free subscription provided to all donors by
MultiLingual magazine.
We hope you enjoy the cruise. Bon voyage!
Sincerely,
Megan Zdrojkowski and Tanya Sydorenko,
2006 Fund Drive Coordinators

Subject: How to Donate
This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $52,932. This money will go to help keep the
List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.
There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!
You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.
Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.
For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://linguistlist.org/donate.html
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
