Meeting Description: 

In spite of their importance, the phonetic basis of distinctive features remains inadquately understood.  Quantal theory (developed by K.N. Stevens and colleagues) is among the recent models which has most successfully integrated articulatory, acoustic and auditory approaches to feature definition.  

However, many questions remain open, and new experimental work is needed to test this and related approaches to the phonetic definition of features.  At the colloquium, the following questions may be raised, among others:  What are the features and how are they defined?  Why do features exploit certain articulatory-acoustic dimensions instead of others?  Do all features have quantal acoustic or auditory boundaries?   How robust are proposed feature attributes under different conditions (e.g. speaker, language, dialect, speech rate, segment class, phonological and prosodic context), and what is the role of enhancement?  What is the status of features in language acquisition, lexical recognition, or the perception of native and non-native languages?  What is their cognitive status?   

Discussion will involve various perspectives, including phonetic, phonological, psycholinguistic, neurolinguistic, and/or developmental. 

Objective :  To bring researchers in the fields of linguistics, phonetics and cognitive sciences together to discuss a common theme : the phonetic bases of the ultimate units of spoken language, the distinctive features.  This is a one-day conference and there is no call for papers.
