Subject: Editor Kevin Burrows on entering LINGUIST

During this last summer, I had been shepherded into the LINGUIST List office by one
of my favorite professors. She had suggested that I speak with Anthony Aristar about
the possibility of me gaining some employment. At the time, I was working as a
carpenter for a friend, but the project was coming to a close. I was looking for some
other way to pay my bills, but the thought of working for a functioning linguistic
organization had never realistically crossed my mind. I had always worked with my
hands, so the notion of employment in such an academic setting was a little more
than just a bit intimidating. I was nervous that I would be unqualified and
ill-prepared. It's astounding how right I was!

Within a fortnight (or two) I was put into the position of editor of the Conferences
area. Not only was I responsible for the posting of important and prominent
conferences from around the globe, I was corresponding with established and important
linguists from various different fields, many of whom to me had only been names in
textbooks and research before. The astonishment of such an interaction with those
that I had esteemed so highly was rather flabbergasting, especially to a boy who
thought that he was doomed, more or less, to a life of swinging hammers and carrying
heavy things.

Not too long thereafter, I realized the complexity and importance of LINGUIST. I can
assure you that I had never had any experience in the maintenance of an academic website.
And I soon began to understand that the people of LINGUIST had never quite done anything
of the like before working here. I was, and still am, so terribly impressed by the
competence and diligence of all of my coworkers as they, with an incredibly professional
organization, managed to undertake such an overwhelming onus. The amazing thing is
that they actually were the ones who had developed the original site, worked tirelessly
to maintain its integrity and functionality, and additionally participated in projects
like E-MELD, OLAC, etc. and constantly projecting more ideas and inventions that will
forever help the field of linguistics, and many other academic branches to boot. The
people of LINGUIST really deserve an incredible amount of applause for all that they have
learned and strive to gain in order to assist the field of linguistics. They are the most
hard working and underpaid individuals that I have ever met, and I am terribly proud
to be a part of that organization (though now, I suppose, I am also in that
unenviable category of the overwhelmed).

Just being part of such a thing as LINGUIST has been quite an experience. I still
am overwhelmed with the capacity of all of my fellow workers, and am absolutely in awe
of the energy and intelligence of our moderators Helen and Anthony. This entire
experience has been quite the inspiration of my life. I could prattle on and on
about many of the things that we do here, and about all of the incredible people
that I have met and befriended, but that could literally go on for quite some time.
I would simply like to thank everybody involved, especially those of you who
contribute your time, money, and effort into making the LINGUIST List all that
it is today, which is something incredible and critical to the world, and one of
the most important opportunities to me and to everyone of the other talented
and intelligent people that I work with.

Thanks,
Kevin Burrows
Calls and Conferences Editor

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
