Subject: Editor Tanya Sydorenko's Story
You are gonna like my story! It is about how not easy it is to get into LINGUIST,
but how much more difficult it is once you do. (But how I nevertheless like it, as
crazy as it might sound!)
I wanted to get accepted into the M.A. program in linguistics at Eastern only because
I dreamed to work at the LINGUIST List. Well, for some reason I wasn't offered a
GAship from the LINGUIST List, but I was offered to work on a very interesting
project concerning multimedia computer programs and language teaching. So, I came to
Eastern anyway (I guess that was my fate). I was still interested in the work the
LINGUIST List does, so I came to their weekly meetings. Next year I was offered a job
at the LINGUIST List. I was so happy and joyful that day. Well, the morning when I
came to the LINGUIST List office to begin my new job suddenly did not seem so bright
anymore! I was given about three, four, maybe five projects to work on and I had no
idea what any of those were! But you know what? I was actually able to figure out
what to do with those projects and learned so much from them. I thought that was
challenging ... but I was wrong. Having almost no programming experience, I was given
a project I had no idea how to do (big surprise). After three months, I was
programming non-stop and with pretty good success! So, yes, working at the LINGUIST
List is challenging, but then where else would I learn how to program in three
months?!
Now, how does this relate to you, the subscribers, and me, the linguist? You receive
services of excellent quality in record time done by graduate students. I learn as
much about computers as I can, which is the knowledge I need to teach languages
with the help of computer applications. Because of my assignment this year (I am one
of the two Fund Drive coordinators), I am learning to be creative and also that I
actually can be creative (under certain pressure). As a Fund Drive coordinator, I get
to listen to various ideas the crew has to make the Fund Drive not only a
money-gathering event, but also a fun event. I also get to implement many of those
ideas using computers. This is exactly what I will be doing in the field of computer
assisted language learning. As you see, both linguists and LINGUISTS benefit from
keeping the sun shining over the LINGUIST List. Thank you for appreciating my work
and that of the whole LINGUIST List crew! And thank you for your tremendous support!

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!
You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.
Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.
For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://linguistlist.org/donate.html
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
