Subject: MorDebe - Portuguese Lexicon

Recently, the ILTEC institute in Lisbon, Portugal published a new on-line
lexical resource for European Portuguese. This resource, called MorDebe, is
a free, large-scale, lexicographically controlled lexicon, concentrated
around inflectional morphology. The lexicon provides inflectional
paradigms, word-class, and orthographic information for over 125.000
Portuguese words - with a total of around 1,5 million word-forms. On top of
this, the database provides information about derivational morphology and
orthographic variation for a large amount of lexical items. The database
also contains words of other national variants of Portuguese (Brazil,
Angola, Cabo Verde, etc.) - all words belonging to these variants are
explicitly marked as such.

The lexicon can be queried on-line at the following URL:
http://www.iltec.pt/mordebe. The website is oriented towards the general
public rather than the linguistic community, providing an online verb
dictionary, inverted dictionary, and orthography guide. But the site offers
several advanced search features making it a very useful tool for
linguistic research, such as search on word-form or lemma, word-ending, and
morphosyntactic restrictions.

The MorDebe database is an open lexicon that is constantly being updated.
The database is integrated with a semi-automatic neologism detection tools
(NeoTrack) which helps to keep the database up-to-date. All inflectional
data in MorDebe are stored - the database does not provide inflections for
novel or non-existing words. Inflections for new words can only be
generated by the tool that was developed for the creation of MorDebe:
http://www.iltec.pt/neotrack/regmorph.php.

The interface and the data in MorDebe are specific for Portuguese, but the
database behind it is set up in a largely language independent manner.
Anybody interested in more information about the design of the database or
the related neologism observation tool, please contact the author:
