The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Linguistics and English Language are a highly research active area of the School of Philosophy,
Psychology and Language Sciences (rated 5 in the 2001 RAE). Individuals who can initiate and
conduct research of the highest quality within the area of English Language, as demonstrated by a
track record of publication, are sought. We particularly encourage applications from linguists whose
research is in one or more of the following areas, in combination with Scots: aspects of the history
of English from the Early Modern period onwards, text, discourse and style and (historical)
sociolinguistics.
The successful applicant will play a strong part in the department's lively research culture, and will
be able to play a major role in its rapidly-developing postgraduate programme, through attracting
and supervising PhD students and developing and teaching courses at MSc level, particularly within
the area of English Language. S/he will contribute fully to the delivery of the department's
undergraduate teaching, and play an appropriate part in academic administration within the School
