Description:
The Division of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies in the College of Education and Human Development
at the University of Texas at San Antonio, seeks an assistant/associate professor in the area of
applied linguistics/TESL to begin Fall 2007, pending budgetary approval. We seek a scholar with
expertise in one or more of the following areas: second language acquisition and learning,
second language literacy, computer-assisted language learning, assessment, language minority
education, sociolinguistics, classroom-based research, language policy or other related areas.
The division offers a Ph.D. in Culture, Literacy, and Language, a Master of Arts degree in
Bicultural-Bilingual Studies with a concentration in ESL, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mexican
American Studies. It also provides undergraduate and graduate programs for teacher
certification as well as support courses for other programs in the University.
Responsibilities include: Teach graduate and undergraduate courses, advise masters and
doctoral degree students, pursue an active research agenda, and contribute to the university and
community through service activities.
Associate Professor; Required Qualifications: Doctorate in Applied Linguistics, Education or an
appropriate discipline. Evidence of an established research agenda and strong publication record
in one or more of the areas listed above. Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the
undergraduate and/or graduate level, and ESL/EFL teaching experience.
Associate Professor; Preferred Qualifications: Experience advising doctoral students, record of
securing research support, proficiency in a language other than English.
Assistant Professor; Required Qualifications: Doctorate in Applied Linguistics, Education or an
appropriate discipline. Evidence of research agenda and publications in one of the areas listed
above.
Assistant Professor; Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the
undergraduate and/or graduate level, experience advising graduate students, record of securing
research support, proficiency in a language other than English, and ESL/EFL teaching experience.
Appointment, to begin Fall 2007, pending budgetary approval, at the rank of Assistant or
Associate Professor. Salary is competitive.
Applicants must submit by mail a letter of application stating the rank applied for, curriculum
vitae, three publications or writing samples, and names and contact information of three
referees.
For hire at the assistant professor level, ABD candidates must have completed the doctorate by
June 30, 2007. Applicants who are not U.S. Citizens must state their current visa and residency
status.
