The '33rd Incontro di Grammatica Generativa' will be organized by the University of  Bologna (Department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, Via Cartoleria, 5  and will take place on March 1-3,  2007. The Conference  venue is:  Piazza S. Giovanni in Monte 2 - Aula Prodi. 

Submissions are invited for papers in field related to the formal study of grammar. Authors are requested to submit their anonymous abstracts by e-mail at

Please, add the author's complete surface mail address and e-mail address at the bottom of the e-mail message. Abstracts can be sent as attachments in .doc, .pdf or .rtf-format. 

Abstracts must be anonymous and cannot exceed the length of 5000 characters 
including title, references, etc. Each speaker will be allotted 20/30 minutes 
for presentation plus10 minutes for discussion.

Students are invited to specify their status, as a quota will be reserved for 
them.

Journée d'études ATALA 'Typologies de Textes Pour le Traitement Automatique'
9 décembre 2006, Paris. 

Cette journée ATALA souhaite concentrer les exposés sur la notion de typologie textuelle c'est à dire le rattachement d'un document à tel ou tel type de textes (ou genre ou registre, vu la terminologie fluctuante) : manuel technique, texte de loi, constat d'accident, rapport de stage, recommandation médicale, documentation technique, éditorial, article scientifique,... Si cette approche typologique fait l'hypothèse de types de textes définis a priori, l'appel concerne aussi, mais dans une moindre mesure, une typologie a posteriori où les catégories émergent en fonction de l'examen et du regroupement de traits linguistiques ou autres. 

Dans cet éventail de recherches allant du plus théorique ou plus pratique, cette journée se veut  un lieu d'échange et de discussions entre des chercheurs qui abordent le texte avec des points de vue très divers mais qui envisagent une automatisation des traitements. 

Cette journée abordera en particulier les points suivants : 

- quelles mesures de distances pour calculer des proximités/oppositions entre textes ? Quels facteurs, quels traits (lexical, syntaxique, sémantique, pragmatique) utiliser ? 

- les systèmes de TAL existants utilisent les mêmes outils, les mêmes ressources, réalisent les mêmes traitements quel que soit le type du texte. Est-ce pertinent ? Si non, est-il possible de  traiter la circularité apparente : l'efficacité des outils dépend du type de textes mais la détection du type de textes nécessite l'utilisation d'outils ? 

- Les deux façons de définir une typologie  a priori (avec des catégories pré-établies de genres, de domaines, de contextes de production) ou a posteriori (où les catégories émergent en fonction de l'examen et du regroupement de traits linguistiques), concordent-elles ? 

- Un texte est-il entièrement d'un certain type ou peut-il comporter des parties relevant chacune de types différents ? Quels moyens de repérage ? 

- En quoi les documents structurés renouvellent la problématique de typologie des textes ? 

- ou toute autre proposition de communication en relation avec les thèmes de la journée. 

Les propositions de communication (de 1 à 5 pages) au format WORD ou PDF devront parvenir aux organisateurs pour le 10 novembre 2006

pour une journée le 9 décembre.

2nd Call for Papers:

The ATALA Workshop ''Text Typology for Natural Language Processing'' will be held in Paris on December 9, 2006. This workshop is open to all researchers working in the field of Text Typology and/or Text Categorisation, ranging from Text/Corpus Linguistics to Machine Categorisation, from Computational Linguistics to Discourse Analysis, etc. This one day work-shop style forum will encourage discussions between scholars belonging to different research currents but sharing similar research interests concerning the notion of text typology.

We suggest the following points for discussion :

- How to measure distances between texts? Which factors or features (lexical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic) to use?

- How text categorisation affect the use of NLP tools and vici versa?

- How to (re)consider results obtained by different approaches (categorisations induced from text groupings a posteriori and those projected on texts a priori)?

- Can a single text reflect different text types? How to detect heterogeneous parts on a document level?

- In which way structured documents renew the issue of text topology?

Contributions concerning other relevant subjects are also welcomed.

We expect short communication proposals (1 to 5 pages) in WORD or PDF format to be sent by November 10, 2006.
