Meeting Description: 

The number of Digital Library initiatives worldwide has been increasing in recent times. The problem of organizing and accessing information from these digital libraries has given rise to research issues like indexing and retrieval, multilingual and multimedia information processing, natural language processing and many others. This workshop is intended to give participants a better understanding of these issues, along with an awareness of state-of-the-art tools and technologies involved in digital libraries, through invited lectures by internationally renowned researchers, practitioners, and developers. Interested participants from academia, government and industry are invited to attend the workshop to exchange views and to help formulate future directions of research in this exciting area.

The workshop will address the following sub-areas:

    - Indexing/Retrieval
    - Multilingual Information Access
    - Natural Language Processing
    - Image/Multimedia
    - Document Analysis and Processing
    - IR/DL Tools
    - Standardization Issues (Archiving, Annotation, Metadata) 

Digital technology is increasingly pervading all spheres of life. In
particular, our approach to information access has radically changed
over the last 10-12 years. Not surprisingly, this has had an enormous
impact on the traditional storehouses of information, viz. our libraries.
The number of Digital Library initiatives worldwide has thus been
increasing in recent times. More and more universities, public libraries,
museums, and public service institutes are involved in building digital
information archives.
                                                                                                                  
The technological needs and challenges arising out of these efforts have
inspired much multi-disciplinary research activity covering areas such
as image processing and document analysis, information retrieval,
cross-lingual issues in information access, data compression techniques,
multimedia, and of course, library and information science.
                                                                                                                  
The International Workshop on Research Issues in Digital Libraries is
intended to give participants a better understanding of these research
problems, along with an awareness of state-of-the-art tools and
technologies involved in digital libraries, through invited lectures by
internationally renowned researchers, practitioners, and developers,
some of whom will be visiting India for the first time. We are fortunate
enough to count among our speakers and contributors eminent scientists such
as Henry Baird, Ed Fox, Michael Hart, Donald Kraft, George Nagy, Stephen
Robertson, Karen Sparck Jones, Ian Witten, and others.
                                                                                                                  
Interested participants from academia, government and industry will be
invited to attend the workshop to exchange views and to help formulate
future directions of research in this exciting area.
