Description:

A tenure position in Spoken language/Phonetics and Phonology ('Maître de
conférences') will be available next year (starting September 2007) in the
English Department of the University of Paris 3 - Sorbonne Nouvelle in central
Paris. On satisfactory completion of a 12 month probationary period, the
successful candidate will be appointed to a permanent lectureship, with great
potential in both teaching and research. Gross income will be approximately
25,000 euros per year.

Candidates should have completed a PhD in the field of English phonetics and/or
phonology. Early career applicants should also be able to demonstrate an
excellent potential for research. Preference will be given to native speakers of
English, with some background in the teaching of English as a foreign language
and experience in the production of audio-visual material. A good working
knowledge of French is also essential.

TEACHING AND ADMINISTRATION: The teaching load is approximately 190 hours a
year, mostly at the undergraduate level, teaching the essentials (practical and
theoretical) of English phonetics and phonology. Candidates will have to
supervise and examine undergraduate students. A significant contribution to
administration is also expected.

RESEARCH:  If interested, the new 'Maître de conférences' can also apply for
membership at the LPP (Laboratoire de Phonétique et Phonologie) of the
University of Paris 3/CNRS, which has a strong international reputation in
general phonetics and phonology.

APPLICATION: The application procedure for lectureships takes place in two stages.

STAGE 1. 'QUALIFICATION'

Applicants are required to go through a preliminary process of national
selection ('qualification'). In order to obtain 'qualification', candidates
should first apply online on the website of the Ministry of Education and
Research ('Ministère de l'Education et de la Recherche') in October 2006. A few
weeks later, they will receive the names and addresses of two 'evaluators', to
whom the full application (including a summary of their thesis in French) is to
be submitted. Candidates whose application has been successful will be
officially notified in February 2007. 'Qualified' candidates for
teaching/research positions in French universities will then be eligible to
apply for any of the 'Maître de Conférences' positions that will be advertised
for the year 2007.

STAGE 2. 'RECRUTEMENT' (APPLICATIONS FOR SPECIFIC POSITIONS IN FRENCH UNIVERSITIES)

Specific positions will be advertised on the Ministry's website in February 2007
(dates may vary). The closing date for applications is generally in late
March/early April. Short-listed candidates will be called for interview in early
May, and immediately informed of the University's decision.
