Dear Subscribers,

In the mornings I get in, after waking up at 6:30 am (and running through Latin
declensions and Latin/Greek morphemes in English words, to warm up my brain and
prepare for class), and work on Notice Board, Dissertations, Programs, and
Institutions. I'm still an undergraduate, one of few on the staff, and I enjoy
reading through all the different programs from all over the world, but I
especially love receiving new dissertation abstracts; I feel like I'm
experiencing the "cutting edge" of the field, reading about all the different
approaches to problems both novel and classic. One day I'm going to be writing
a dissertation, and some of the abstracts and papers that I scroll through
absolutely inspire me.

In January, a former LINGUIST editor, Jessica Boynton, left for Perth and left
me in charge of the E-MELD School of Best Practices, which is also quite
exciting; before that I hadn't realized the extent of the different
technologies are involved in linguistics. The E-MELD School of Best Practices
has succeeded where numerous friends and computer science teachers had failed;
it got me to unabashedly embrace programming languages. It also puts me in
contact with people I had only read about, and the feeling of having someone
being transformed from a name in a book to a being face and a conversation is
utterly amazing. It's actually kind of funny that I took over the School of
Best Practices from Jessica, too, since she and the SBP are huge components in
the story that got me to The LINGUIST List in the first place.

My whole life I had been interested in science, although I had a passion more
for the "physical sciences" - astronomy, physics, chemistry, biology - as well
as experimental protocol. As a child I remember the patience and diligence of
the archaeologist's brush fascinating me. While in high school, I picked up a
25-cent "Teach Yourself Russian" book from 1967 at a secondhand store
(partially out of curiosity, mostly to try to win over a local Russian girl).
The book itself was a sight to see; every drawing in bright red, hammer and
sickle adorning everything. After a few more "Teach Yourself" books on various
languages, I decided that, rather than studying individual languages, I could
study Language.

So I googled "linguistics," and found The LINGUIST List and E-MELD, and,
wouldn't you know it? That entire enterprise is physically only three hours
from my house! I had heard of "endangered languages" before, but I never
realized how big of a problem it really was. That fall I enrolled in Eastern
Michigan University, with a declared major of linguistics. I took as many
linguistics classes as I could, and I spent the rest of my time exploring other
fields of the "soft" or "social sciences" - anthropology, psychology, history,
and sociology mainly. During my African American English class, I met a
linguist a year older than me named Jessica Boynton. Aside from being a
brilliant linguist who had just started working for LINGUIST List, she was from
a small town relatively close to mine in northern Michigan. We became fast
friends, and this past summer she finally convinced me to apply.

So I did...and wouldn't you know it? It was the best decision I'd ever made.
Next semester I'll be a graduate student here at EMU, and I hope to complete my
Master's while working here at LINGUIST. An opportunity like this is too good
to pass up; being surrounded by brilliant young linguists every day motivates
me to do more.

That's where you come in. I'd like to personally thank each and every one of
you who has already donated. Thank you for helping us provide our services for
another year. Thank you for helping graduate students (and undergraduates,
too!) contribute something back to the field that we have come to love.

LINGUIST Editor

Dear Subscribers,

Fund Drive is upon us once again, and for some of us on the LINGUIST crew, it's
our first time to be helping run the show.

It's been just over a month since I officially took over as the team leader for
the E-MELD School of Best Practices, ever since the former leader, Jessica
Boynton, left in February this year to do fieldwork on a Fulbright scholarship
at the University of Western Australia in Perth. I've got some pretty big shoes
to fill!

We're still working on the School of Best Practices, tweaking various aspects
and trying to stay relevant. We've added a Phonetic Ontology and are preparing
a new interface for the Tool Room with new categories! In preparation for this,
we have expanded our software listings and are updating older entries to try to
give you the best information possible. Did we mention that we are also busy
with preparations for the upcoming 2007 conference, Toward the Interoperability
of Language Resources, to be held in July at Stanford University as part of the
LSA Summer Institute? You may check it out on our web site at:
 http://linguistlist.org/tilr

That's where you come in, loyal readers of and contributors to The LINGUIST
List. Without your support, we couldn't do many of the things that we do. So,
with that in mind, please keep submitting comments to the School, keep
discussing Best Practices, keep submitting relevant resources to the Reading
Room, keep commenting on software in the Tool Room--in other words, keep
helping us help you more effectively! Please go to these URLs to see our
progress:

Reading Room: http://emeld.org/school/readingroom/index.html
Tool Room: http://emeld.org/school/toolroom/software/index.cfm

And if you get need some questions answered, remember that you can always
Ask-an-Expert at: http://emeld.org/school/ask-expert/index.html

We look forward to hearing from you, particularly during our Fund Drive 2007
that is taking place right now. So please take the time to consider donating to
our fund drive--we couldn't do all we do without your contributions.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Hunter Lockwood
LINGUIST Editor

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $55,000. This money will go to help keep the
List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our Fund Drive 2007
LINGUIST List Superhero Adventure for some Fund Drive fun!

http://linguistlist.org/donation/fund-drive2007/

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
