Description:
A Corpus-Based Investigation of Natural Speech Segmentation.
A research assistant is required from late June 2007 to work on a
three-year project funded by a Leverhulme Trust award to Dr. Sven Mattys.
The project will investigate the perceptual and cognitive mechanisms
involved in the recognition of spoken words in conversational speech. This
will require the development and analysis of large corpora of
conversational and read speech.
The work will be supervised on a day-to-day basis by project research
fellow Dr. Laurence White. The research assistant will be involved in all
phases of the project, from experimental designs to data analyses. Key
aspects of the job will include measuring and editing sound files using
speech analysis software, setting up perceptual experiments, testing
participants, running statistical analyses on participants' data, and
contributing to data interpretation.
A undergraduate or Master's degree in psychology, speech science,
phonetics, or a closely related discipline is essential. Some practical
experience of phonetic analysis and/or psycholinguistic research is highly
desirable.
The department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Bristol is a
strong and active research department, receiving a 5* rating in the
previous research assessment exercise. The department already hosts a
number of research assistants, postgraduate students, and post-docs, and is
committed to their professional development.
Salary at start: £21,050/per annum. The closing date for applications is 25
April 2007. Interviews will be held the first week of May 2007, for a start
in June 2007 or as soon as possible thereafter. For more information
