Dear colleagues,

A new on-line encyclopedia has recently launched, and it needs your help:

http://en.citizendium.org

'Citizendium' is like Wikipedia - a non-profit volunteer project building a
free resource - but with more input from professionals:

http://www.citizendium.org/release_003.html (press release)

Citizendium launched in April 2007, and currently has over 1300 articles.
Some of these are Wikipedia originals, now subjected to expert scrutiny;
many are brand new, written and checked by people ranging from interested
amateurs to esteemed professors, none of whom are anonymous. Articles
deemed high quality are 'approved' and are no longer freely editable; we've
a few of these already, though none in linguistics, which is why we need
your help!

Citizendium's Linguistics Workgroup has about 30 people signed up,
including a handful of frequent contributors (for now a couple of
academics, plus some PhD students and graduates with related degrees), but
we need professionals to act as 'editors', providing authoritative
guidance, as well as more 'authors':

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Category:Linguistics_Workgroup

There are also workgroups for Literature, Psychology and the main arts and
science subjects. Site-wide we have about 1600 authors and over 200 editors.

Have a look at some of the pages we've been working on, and compare them to
Wikipedia:

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Linguistics (Wikipedia version being rewritten)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linguistics

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Phonology (Wikipedia version being rewritten)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonology

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Syllable (in progress from scratch)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syllable

These pages and more are freely editable - if you don't like what we've
written, change it, because our articles require scrutiny and peer review.
You'll be respected for your work because the 'community' will have
confidence that you know what you're talking about. Presently the articles
represent our limited backgrounds - language acquisition, phonology,
anthropological linguistics and information on specific (mainly European)
languages. We need more!

Please consider joining Citizendium, if only to check out the atmosphere -
you're not obligated to do anything, but we encourage members to 'be bold'
in editing pages. No-one will snap your hand off and leave naughty words
all over your user page. Some helpful links:

http://en.citizendium.org/wiki/Help:Contents - how to get started

http://www.citizendium.org/cfa.html - how to join (you need to submit
evidence of your identity, such as a weblink to your academic home page,
and provide a short biography; applicants for editorship must submit a CV.
We have a lot of applicants to process, so you may have to wait a while.)

We look forward to seeing you on Citizendium.

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $55,000. This money will go to help keep the
List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our Fund Drive 2007
LINGUIST List Superhero Adventure for some Fund Drive fun!

http://linguistlist.org/donation/fund-drive2007/

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
