Subject: Global Multilingual Digital Place Name Data
The United States Board on Geographic Names(US BGN), the National
Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and the United States Geological Survey
together announce the availability of digital geographic names data to
interested researchers. Toponymic data are available in the form of
digital gazetteers for the entire world, including both foreign and
domestic coverages.
These rich data are likely to prove a valuable resource to researchers in
the following fields: onomastics, general and computational linguistics,
natural language processing, and linguistic anthropology. The US BGN,
together with its component agencies and departments, encourages the use of
its entire data holdings for research purposes. All data are provided free
of charge and without restriction.
Information on US BGN domestic place-name data holdings and policies can be
found at http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/index.html. Information on US
BGN foreign geographic names data holdings can be found at
http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/index.html. General background
information on the United States Board on Geographic Names can be found at
http://geonames.usgs.gov.
Inquiries on domestic geographic names may be addressed to
gnis_manager at usgs.gov. Questions on foreign geographic names may be sent to
geonames at nga.mil.
