Call Deadline: 30-Jun-2007
Meeting Description
SS17 will be held in April 3-5, 2008 at the Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam). We
invite submissions for papers on any aspect of sociolinguistics and in
particular on the theme 'Micro and Macro Connections'.
Micro and Macro Connections
The 17th edition of 'The Sociolinguistic Symposium, Europe's leading
international conference on language in society, will be held in Amsterdam from
3-5 April 2008 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). The theme of the
conference is Micro and Macro Connections.
Sociolinguistics is about the relationship between language and society. By
proposing Micro and Macro connections as the conference's theme, we want to
invite research that generates insight into the interplay between language and
society by examining the ways social structure is oriented to and affected by
verbal practices. Language does not just reflect social facts. The connections
between language and social organization are multi-layered, dynamic and
reflexive and they are accomplished at many different levels of language use.
When people use language, they are actors engaging in some interactive project
that defines the ground for the ways parameters such as identity, community and
culture are shaped. Therefore, we will particularly welcome proposals that
explore the ways verbal practices display and contribute to social organization.
About the Sociolinguistics Symposia
The Sociolinguistics Symposia are organised bi-annually since the 1970s by a
group of sociolinguists who recognized the need for a forum for discussing
research findings and for debating theoretical and methodological issues
concerning language in society. Until 2000, most participants came from within
the UK, but ever since then the symposium has developed into the leading
international conference on language in society in Europe, attracting 400-500
participants on average. The first symposium on the continent was organised in
April 2002 by the University of Ghent and from then on the intention has been to
alternate between a UK and a continental venue.

Meeting Description:
Translation Studies has now entered the mainstream of academic teaching and
research not only in Europe but in the wider world. While the practice of
translation is seen as a popular career option attracting large numbers of
undergraduate and postgraduate students, the development of translation theories
is proceeding in exciting new directions in a fast-growing area of academic
research. Translation will be considered in relation to the following topics:
Postcolonialism
Ideology
Deconstruction
Gender
Ethnicity
Regionalism
New media
These aspects of translation studies, as well as many other related issues, such
as versions ('transcreations') vs. 'faithful' translations, will be explored in
the Colloquium.
