Description:

Fixed Term (3 years)

Applications are invited for a lecturer or senior lecturer in the School of
Linguistics and English Language, with a specialization in phonetics and
phonology. The successful applicant will contribute to teaching and
research in the School of Linguistics and English Language. He/she will
also work in conjunction with members of the Schools of Psychology and the
School of Healthcare Sciences in a newly developed, newly funded
post-graduate course in Speech and Language Therapy. The ability to teach
in any area of language disorders, speech and language therapy or child
language acquisition would be an advantage, but is not a requirement. The
successful applicant will be required to have a PhD in Linguistics with a
specialization in phonetics or phonology. The successful candidate must be
research active and have a strong record of publications relative to
experience. The expectation is that the post will begin as soon as
possible. The first cohort of students for the postgraduate diploma in
Speech and Language Therapy will be admitted in January 2008.

Main purposes of the job: 

- To plan, prepare and deliver lectures and tutorials at graduate and
undergraduate level, responding effectively to a variety of backgrounds,
learning styles and group class sizes.
- To collaborate with colleagues in the Schools of Psychology and
Healthcare Science in the development and delivery of the Post-graduate
Diploma in Speech and Language Therapy
- To motivate students to a thorough comprehension of their courses, giving
meaningful and constructive feedback on the quality of their work.
- To demonstrate enthusiasm for the subject and for helping others to learn.
- To keep abreast of new professional, educational and related social,
economic, political, and technological developments, so that the School
maintains a position in the forefront of its field.
- To assist with continuous development of courses.
- To engage in scholarly activity in order to ensure the School maintains
and enhances its professional reputation.
- To respond quickly and competently to course or student needs and
problems, ensuring confidentiality where necessary.
- To undertake course-related administration, co-ordinating activities with
relevant staff and ensuring people have sufficient, clear information in
good time.   

Key tasks/responsibilities: designing and teaching two specialist modules
in phonetics and phonology, for undergraduates in linguistics and
postgraduates in Speech and Language Therapy; teaching two further
undergraduate modules in areas to be determined; to take responsibility for
the pastoral care of a proportion of the School's undergraduate or
postgraduate students; supervising undergraduate and postgraduate
dissertations in areas of competence; undertaking normal examining and
administrative duties.

Educational/qualifications:
Essential: PhD in Linguistics, with relevant specialism in phonetics or
phonology
Desirable: some knowledge of Welsh

Work and relevant experience:
Essential: strong record of publications relative to experience;  previous
teaching experience in Higher Education with evidence of high student
satisfaction ratings.
Desirable: previous experience in working as part of a small team; previous
experience of working with professionals in speech and language therapy.

Personal qualities and abilities:
Essential: good communication abilities, well organised, competent at
administration.
