Which well-known syntactician spent 5 years as a rock musician?

If you have been reading our Linguist of the Day feature, you know that the 
answers are Geoff Pullum, Bernard Comrie, and Robert Blust. 

This year, like last, the LINGUIST List student crew has chosen the linguists 
they most admire and has asked these well-known scholars to tell our readers how 
they became interested in linguistics.  And this year, like last, almost a dozen 
prominent linguists have generously agreed to share their stories with us.

And what inspirational stories they are!  We started this feature because we 
thought young linguists might find it encouraging, but we never realized that 
the paths to linguistics we'd hear about would be quite so varied and 
interesting--or that so many busy, successful linguists would be willing to 
contribute to the feature.  In taking the time to write, they are not only 
inspiring young readers and interesting older ones, but they are supporting the 
LINGUIST List Fund Drive.  And we are very grateful.
