Abstract:

The HDV is the first German dictionary of first names that documents the
occurrence and distribution of nearly every first name given in the German
language area since 1400, using evidence from numerous printed and other
sources. It provides a foundation for further research into the history of
German personal names and will also be of value in genealogical research.
The alphabetical entries give information on the meaning (etymology), use
and legitimacy of the names, together with their correct pronunciation and
spelling, give the patrons, and quote relevant literature.
