Description:

Performance Space 122 in association with Movement Research and Instituto
Cervantes seeks an English speaking cognitive linguist for 4 weeks of
exploratory research with Spanish choreographer Juan Dominguez.

The individual chosen will provide Juan with the linguistic knowledge and
will guide him during one on one research sessions (Nov 26-Dec 14, Mon-Fri,
for 3 hours/day) and during a larger workshop with ten participants (Dec
17-21). 

During the individual research with Juan, the main focus will be studying
how language is built, how we use it, and how we understand reality through
language. In the four previous workshops, Juan has tried experiments that
influence the way of perceiving time and space through the verbs of
movement. This will be a continuation of that research and experimentation.

During the larger workshop the linguist will spend the first two days
giving the participants an introduction about verbs with special focus on
the verbs of movement. The linguist will be present during the workshop (5
hours/day) as a reference for further questions and of course to give his
or her point of view about what the participants will work on. 

This is a paid position.

More about the project:

>From ... to ... in New York will be the fifth of six workshops that will happen
in 2007 (Madrid, Beijing, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, New York and Vienna). 

How do we understand movement? How do we write it? How do we execute it? 

This research project will consist of creating a code that relates
oral/written language (intellectual intelligence) through native languages,
with corporal language  (non intellectual intelligence). Once the code is
constructed we will play with it creating new possibilities of
relationships between body, subjectivity and different languages, looking
for new methods of producing choreography. 

Based on the analysis of language as a formal system, we will focus on the
verbs of movement. This experience will be developed through the
interconnection of different disciplines. This is essential, as the project
is contaminated and enriched by the participation of the artists and other
local collaborators involved. 

>From these processes a documentary will be created and a performance which
will occur at PS122 and internationally in 2009.

About Juan Dominguez:

Juan is a performer and choreographer who studied ballet, contemporary
dance, and video in Spain and the USA. He received several grants to study
at Movement Research in New York City where he also studied different
techniques and yoga. Since 1987, he has worked as a performer and artistic
assistant with different choreographers and companies in Europe. Since
1992, he has developed his own work.
