Description:

Interdisciplinary Short-Term Fellowships in Speech Research

Edinburgh Speech Science and Technology (EdSST) is an interdisciplinary research
training programme that aims to close the gap between speech science and speech
technology. It is supported by the Early Stage Research Training (EST) scheme of
the EU Marie Curie Programme. EdSST is a collaboration between two major speech
research institutes: the Centre for Speech Technology Research, University of
Edinburgh, and the Speech Science Research Centre, Queen Margaret University. It
covers six main research areas: articulatory phonetic instrumentation and
modeling; speech synthesis; speech recognition; human-computer dialogue systems;
inclusive design for speech technology; augmentative and alternative communication

Two Short-Term Fellowships in quantitative analysis and modeling of articulatory
data are available. These Short-Term Fellowships, with a typical duration of six
months, provide an opportunity for outstanding early stage graduate researchers
and PhD candidates to conduct a well-defined research project at CSTR and SSRC.
The research project should be interdisciplinary; outcomes should be of interest
to both the speech science and the speech technology communities.

Within EdSST, expertise and facilities in articulatory instrumentation and
modeling includes electromagnetic articulography (EMA), electropalatography
(EPG), ultrasound, motion capture, and facial analysis. Speech technology
expertise includes speech synthesis, speech recognition and machine learning.

Applicants should have a first or upper second class honours degree or a Masters
in Informatics, Phonetics, Speech Science, Linguistics, or Speech and Language
Therapy and fulfil the Marie Curie EST selection criteria
