Meeting Description

The Penn Linguistics Colloquium is an annual conference organized by graduate
students in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Pennsylvania. Our
invited speaker this year is Professor Sandra Chung from the University of
California, Santa Cruz. The special session is 'Prosody and its interfaces'. 

The 32nd Penn Linguistics Colloquium
Second Call for Papers

The 32nd Annual Penn Linguistics Colloquium will take place February 22-24,
2008 at the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia.

Invited Speaker: Sandra Chung of the University of California, Santa Cruz
"Chamorro possessives and the syntax-semantics of subjects".

Special Session: Prosody and its interfaces

Papers on any topic in linguistics and associated fields are welcome. Speakers
will have 20 minutes for their presentations and 5 minutes for discussion and
questions.

Deadline: Abstracts are due Monday November 19, 2007. Notification of
acceptance/rejection will be given by Monday, January 14, 2008.

Length: Please limit abstracts to one page, single- or double-spaced. An
additional page may be used for references and tables. Do not include your name
or affiliation within the abstract.

Format: To facilitate the review process, please submit your abstract as a
.pdf file.

Submission: Please submit abstract online via the PLC website: 
http://www.ling.upenn.edu/Events/PLC/

Proceedings: Conference proceedings will be published as a volume of the Penn
Working Papers in Linguistics. Speakers will be invited to provide camera-ready
copies of their papers after the Colloquium.

Meeting Description

The 3rd Northern Englishes Workshop aims to bring together researchers who are
working varieties of English spoken in the north of the British Isles. The north
of England, Scotland and Ireland are included within the remit of NEW and papers
are welcomed from all areas of linguistics and from all theoretical
perspectives. An integral part of NEW is the involvement of postgraduate
students: NEW 3 will host a number of workshop session aimed specifically at
interested postgraduates. 

3rd Northern Englishes Workshop - 2nd Call for Papers

ESRI and the Centre for Linguistic Research at the University of Salford are
pleased to announce that the 3rd Northern Englishes Workshop will be held on
March 27th-28th 2008 at The Old Fire Station, University of Salford (Peel Park
campus - http://www.salford.ac.uk/travel/).

Abstracts pertaining to Northern varieties - of no more than one side of A4
including title, references, name(s) of author(s) and affiliation - are invited,
and may be from any area of linguistics. Continuing the tradition of previous
Northern Englishes Workshops, submissions on Scottish and Irish varieties are
welcomed.  

Please submit abstracts to P.Tipton at salford.ac.uk by 7th December 2007.   
Decisions on abstracts will be communicated by 21st December 2007. 

The 3rd Northern Englishes Workshop will have an interdisciplinary theme and we
are therefore delighted to announce the following plenary speaker:

Dr Gaynor Bagnall (School of English, Sociology, Politics and Contemporary
History, University of Salford)

Social class and the performance of 'being Northern' in narratives of identity
and belonging

Professor Mike Coombes (School of Geography, Politics and Sociology)

Accommodation and workshop dinner
There will be a workshop dinner in Manchester city centre on 27th March, and
accommodation will be arranged at city centre hotels for those who require it. 
More information on accommodation will be available nearer to the time of the
workshop.

Postgraduate workshops

On the afternoon of 27th March, a number of postgraduate workshops will be held.
It is anticipated that the following sessions will be offered (more may be made
available according to demand):

- Theoretical approaches to syntactic variation in the speech community (Graeme
Trousdale, University of Edinburgh)
- Do we still need dialectology? (Joan Beal, University of Sheffield)
- Sociophonetics: more than the sum of its parts? (Kevin Watson, Lancaster
University)
- Why Language Variation and Change needs phonological theory (Patrick
Honeybone, University of Edinburgh)
- How to get published in a linguistics journal (Diane Blakemore, University of
Salford)
