Second Call for Papers
International Conference on Complex Predicates in Iranian Languages
July 5-6, 2008
Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, Paris III
Paris, France
http://iranianlinguistics.org/complexpredicates
The Conference on Complex Predicates in Iranian Languages is intended to cover
analyses of complex predicates in languages belonging to the Iranian language
family, in a range of different frameworks (theoretical, computational,
functional, typological, historical, etc.). Papers addressing any aspect of
complex predicate constructions in Iranian languages are welcome.
Conference Topic
Complex predicates (also referred to as light verb constructions or multiword
expressions) are generally defined as predicates that are composed of more than
one grammatical element (either morphemes or words), each of which contributes
part of the information ordinarily associated with a single head.
The issues raised by complex predicates cut across various subfields of
linguistics. Complex predicates show both phrasal and lexical properties and
thus pose challenges for theories of word formation, the morphology-syntax
interface, as well as lexical semantics. The interaction between predicate
formation and argument structure is another important area of research. In
addition, the study of complex predicates has consequences for a theory of the
syntax-phonology interface.
The purpose of the conference is to bring together those working on complex
predicates in different Iranian languages in order to understand the
similarities and differences within this language family and to discuss possible
typologies, grammaticalization strategies, computational representations,
problematic issues, and the merits of different approaches and analyses.

the Latin American Association of Linguistics and Philology (ALFAL) in
Montevideo, Uruguay from August 18 to 21.
Call for Papers
adaptación a nuevas sociedades.
http://www.mundoalfal.org
Abstracts of between 200 and 250 words are invited for 20 minute presentations
on linguistic research in sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, or applied
linguistics (or combination) involving the Latin American Diaspora, defined as
peoples of Latin American heritage living outside their country of origin (e.g.,
in North America, Europe, or other Latin American countries). Such communities
are of interest because of the situations of dialect and language contact they
entail and the social, educational, and linguistic issues involved in their
adaptation to new matrix societies.
The abstract must be written in Spanish or Portuguese, the official languages of
the conference. Presentations at the conference must also be delivered in
Spanish or Portuguese. There is also the possibility of publishing a paper in
either of these languages in the conference proceedings.
To submit your abstract: send an e-mail to diasporalatina at nyc.rr.com with your
name, affiliation, and the abstract in the body of the e-mail and as an attachment.
