Description:
Laval University has several funded graduate assistantships for research and
teaching in the English Studies and the English as a Second Language Teaching
programs, beginning fall 2008. Interested students at the Master's and PhD
levels are invited to apply. Some assistantships involve hands-on research in
areas as diverse as second language acquisition, creole morphology, and
lexicography. Students have the opportunity to work with well-known researchers
in their respective areas.
Laval University is a French-speaking university in a French-speaking city.
Some courses are given exclusively in French. Students who do not speak French
are required to follow courses designed to help them integrate into the working
and social environment of the University. However, students working on topics
pertaining to English may write their theses in English. Teaching assistantships
and some research assistantships require native or near native fluency in English.
In addition to financial assistance available in the form of research and
teaching assistantships, students from Quebec enjoy a very beneficial fee
structure compared to other North American Universities. Fees for
out-of-province and out-of-country students, though higher than for Quebec
residents, are also attractive.
For general information about our graduate programs and submitting an
application, consult the website of the Département de langues, linguistique et
traduction (listed above). For more specific inquiries, you may contact the
Director of graduate studies in linguistics, Mme Denise Deshaies.
