Description:

Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) offers funding for graduate research
at the MA and PhD level at the newly established Memorial University
Sociolinguistics Laboratory (MUSL). Current projects within a variationist
paradigm investigate rapid social change, identity, and language maintenance.
The focus is on Newfoundland English, a highly internally diverse dialect, and
historically related varieties, including African American English and Caribbean
English Creoles. 

Research advantages include CFI-funded laboratories for sociolinguistics,
phonetics, and aboriginal languages; large sound recording archives, permitting
real-time analyses; Canada's top-ranked comprehensive university library; and
three faculty sociolinguists (two full-time, one emerita), including a Canada
Research Chair.

Qualified candidates will receive competitive entrance and excellence
scholarships, research and teaching assistantships, and potential teaching
opportunities. All MUN students, including international students, qualify for
