How Language Influences Thought - Fresh Perspectives on an Old Question
An open symposium on the occasion of the Year of the Humanities 2007, Germany 

Do the properties of our language(s) determine the way we think? Are we able to
think without language? The relation between language and thought has long been
debated in linguistics, philosophy, and psychology. Just recently, however, the
discussion has gathered momentum again due to new research methods, which now
allow us a more detailed look at the complex interplay between language and the
adjacent cognitive faculties. As a result, traditional views on the universality
of language and its modular architecture are challenged to a serious extent today.

The talks will investigate the categories of ''thought'' and how these are
shaped by language. The program comprises broad theoretical issues, which
address the universality of language and thinking or the interplay between
language, analytical thinking, and gesture.  What are the boundaries of
thinking? The influence of the properties of a single language on the way we
think will also be examined as well as specific linguistics categories (e.g.
event structure, passive, functional categories) and their non-linguistic
correspondents. 

The talks will be held in German.
