The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.
Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: McMaster University
Department: Linguistics & Languages
Web Address: http://www.humanities.mcmaster.ca/~linguistics/
Job Rank: Full Professor
Specialty Areas: Cognitive Science; General Linguistics
Description:
The Department of Linguistics and Languages at McMaster University invites
applications for a tenure-track appointment, effective July 1, 2008, at the
rank of Associate Professor, or Professor. Preference will be given to
applicants qualified to teach in the field of the cognitive science of
language broadly defined. The current minimum salary at the rank of
Associate Professor is $71,118.
The Department has launched a successful undergraduate program in
Linguistic Cognitive Science, drawing on existing strengths in second
language acquisition and bilingualism, cognitive linguistics, clinical
sociolinguistics, phonology, computational text analysis and
psycholinguistics. We expect that this appointment will help anchor and
develop the newly proposed MSc/PhD in the Cognitive Science of Language, an
interdisciplinary program which draws faculty from the Faculties of
Humanities, Science, Health Science and Engineering, and will help build
relationships with the community of clinicians, both in medicine and speech
and language pathology.
Qualifications should include a PhD in Linguistics, Cognitive Science or
closely related field, demonstrated ability to teach at both the
undergraduate and graduate level, and an established record of scholarly
research. The successful candidate will normally teach five one-term
courses in an academic year and participate in the research and
administrative activities of the department. Administrative expertise an asset.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and
Permanent Residents will be given priority. McMaster University is strongly
committed to employment equity within its community, and to recruiting a
diverse faculty and staff. The University encourages applications from all
qualified candidates, including women, members of visible minorities,
Aboriginal persons, and persons with disabilities.
Candidates are asked to provide the following materials: a letter of
application, curriculum vitae, copies of two recent scholarly papers or
chapters, three letters of reference, and teaching evaluations. All
documentation submitted in support of your application becomes the property
of the University and is not returnable. Applications that arrive before
November 30, 2007 will receive full consideration. Please submit
applications (electronic applications accepted) to Dr. Virginia H. Aksan at
the address given below.
