Meeting Description:

Colloquium: Lexical-Semantic Relations from Theoretical and Practical Pespectives

The Institut für Deutsche Sprache in Mannheim (Germany) is holding a colloquium
on various theoretical and practical aspects of lexical semantic relations on
5th-6th June 2008. The colloquium will address specific semantic, lexicographic
and computational issues on a scope of meaning relations, particularly on those
which have traditionally been classified as paradigmatic sense relations. Papers
will explore different linguistic and methodological approaches to the
construction of relations of contrast and meaning equivalence in various
languages such as German, English and Swedish. They will also look at various
semantic models, the use of the Internet as a lexical resource for antonymy
retrieval, as well as the theory and applications of reference databases such as
GermaNet. The subject of sense-related items in dictionaries will also be
explored from both a technical and lexicographic perspective.

This colloquium intends to provide specialists from different disciplines and
areas with the opportunity to present ongoing projects and research findings in
the field. It is also aimed at stimulating dialogue and exchange of thoughts and
ideas not only among experts, but as it will be open to the general public it
will also offer a forum for public discussion among scholars. (No registration
necessary.)

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations
can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax
payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your
financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
