Meeting Description:
NORMS Workshop on Root Phenomena and the Left Periphery
University of Tromsø, Norway, May 19-20 2008
The workshop is organized as a thematic meeting of the NORMS thematic group 'The
syntax of the left periphery'. It is open to anyone interested. There is no
registration fee. For any questions you may have concerning the workshop please
contact the organizers, Kristine Bentzen (kristine.bentzen at hum.uit.no) or Gunnar
Hrafn Hrafnbjargarson (gunnar.hrafn at hum.uit.no).
Certain phenomena, including phenomena such as V2/subject-verb inversion,
illocutionary force, epistemic modality, and pro-drop, are often associated with
root contexts. Many of these phenomena may however also occur in non-root
contexts. The distribution of embedded V2 has, for example, been extensively
discussed for various Germanic languages (see Heycock 2006 for an overview).
With this workshop we wish to bring together people working on issues related to
root phenomena. The main aims of the workshop are (i) to get a clearer picture
of the cross-linguistic distribution of various root phenomena across clause
types, and (ii) to explore which syntactic and/or pragmatic properties
distinguish contexts allowing root phenomena from those that do not.
