Dissertation Abstract:
This study explores how José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero conceptualizes
terrorism and aspects related to it through metaphorical expressions. This
includes a revision of the definition of the metaphor along with the
identification and analysis of the following elements: the syntactic
patterns of metaphorical instances, metaphor keywords, source domains,
conceptual metaphors, and conceptual keys. The interpretation and
explanation of all these elements is provided within the social,
historical, and geopolitical context. Furthermore, this study also intends
to address issues in the process of analyzing metaphorical expressions
within political discourse, debating problems that the data reveals, and
how I determine to solve these issues. This allows me to develop a more
precise and detailed method for analyzing metaphorical expressions with
real data. The corpus is based on Zapatero's political discourse during his
presidency (April 2004 to April 2007). Only the parts of the political
speeches that mention aspects related to terrorism were selected from the
corpus.
Past research has analyzed metaphorical language from a cognitive,
semantic, and pragmatic point of view. This study undertakes a cognitive,
semantic, and pragmatic perspective in analyzing the framing of terrorism.
The cognitive approach will help to understand and interpret the metaphor
as a part of human thought, and the pragmatic analysis will help to
interpret the context in which the metaphors occur. I build on two main
approaches: a cognitive perspective, Lakoff's Conceptual Metaphor Theory,
and a pragmatic perspective, Charteris-Black's Critical Metaphor Analysis.
My research suggests that the definition of metaphor should include the
analysis of syntactic patterns in order to be able to identify them in
corpus. Furthermore, the identification and categorization of metaphorical
elements are not always clear. This indicates that metaphor is part of a
continuum rather than having clear-cut boundaries. This study also shows
that the coexistence of metaphorical elements such as source domains allows
for the framing and conceptualization of terrorism. Finally, all
metaphorical elements provide a frame of reference to build and reveal
Zapatero's political ideology in a systematic and consistent way.
