Description:
One Graduate Teaching Assistantship leading to a PhD is available in the School
of Modern Languages at Newcastle University for a fixed period of three years
from September 2008 (subject to satisfactory annual reports).
The successful candidate will receive an annual grant of £12,600 (about 17,660
Euros) to carry out postgraduate research on a topic in one of the following
fields of Modern Languages:
- Chinese and Japanese Studies
- French Studies
- German Studies
- Japanese Studies
- Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies
- Film Studies
- Linguistics
- Translating and Interpreting Studies
In addition, research degree fees at UK/EU rate will be waived throughout the
three-year period. In return, the Teaching Assistant will be expected to teach
up to six hours of language classes per week and to attend the Faculty of
Humanities and Social Sciences Graduate School Research Training Programme as
part of their doctoral training.
Person Specification
Candidates should have a minimum of an upper-second-class Honours degree in a
relevant area and an MA or equivalent. You should also have native or
near-native proficiency in the relevant language, as well as in English.
Experience in foreign language teaching would be an advantage and further
training will be provided.
Candidates of any nationality may apply for this position. However, the fees
award will only cover fees at the UK/EU rate. Therefore candidates who pay fees
at the international rate will need to provide additional funding to cover their
fees.
