Festschrift in Honour of Professor Paul Mbangwana

A Festschrift to honour Professor Paul Nkad Mbangwana on his 65th birthday in
2008 will be held at the Department of English, Faculty of Arts, University of
Yaounde I on 5 - 6 June 2008. 

Professor Paul Mbangwana is one of the most prominent language scientists the
universities of Cameroon have ever had. In fact, he has trained or contributed
to the training of most Cameroonian linguists.

The three areas of his research works i.e. English speech (Cameroon English
usage), contact linguistics (bilingualism, multilingualism, Pidgins), and oral
literature have all been enriched in fundamental ways by his ideas.

The courses he taught over the years including Research Methodology, Methodology
in Language Teaching and Learning, Spoken English, Usage and Meaning, Semantics
and Pragmatics - have yielded numerous batches of enthusiastic researchers who
are now working in all professional domains for their career development.

His expertise has taken him to universities in many countries in Africa, Europe
and America.

He is Fellow of Cameroon Academy of Science, Fellow of New York Academy of
Science and Member of International English Usage.

The Festschrift ceremony will include three key events: a symposium, Academic
Honours and a Gala Night. 

Details on each of these events are outlined in the Festshrift programme below:
the Symposium will take place on Day One and part of Day Two and the Academic
Honours and Gala Night will take place on Day Two.

Symposium in honour of Professor Paul Mbangwana

Call for Papers 

A Festschrift symposium on Language, Literature and Nation Building to honour
Professor Paul Nkad Mbangwana on his 65th birthday in 2008 will be held at the
Department of English, Faculty of Arts, University of Yaounde I, Yaounde,
Cameroon on 5 - 6 June 2008. 

Researchers and students working in the different areas spanned by Professor
Mbangwana's works are invited to contribute papers that will be presented at the
Festshrift symposium, scheduled on Day One and part of Day Two of the event.

These areas of research include: (1) English speech, (2) Language contacts, (3)
Oral literature and (4) Language, literature and nation-building.

We invite submissions for talks and posters on topics in these areas. 

The abstract should contain no more than 300 words. Five key words should be
provided. The abstract text (presented in Times New Roman 12) should be divided
into two sections. 

Section 1 should provide the following information: (1.1) Name, (1.2)
Nationality, (1.3) Occupation/Professional Title, (1.4) Academic Qualifications,
(1.5) Affiliation, (1.6) Contact Address (postal, fax, phone, email, (1.7) the
title of the paper you would like to present during the session, (1.8) the
strand/area of research in which the paper falls, and lastly, a statement on how
you got to know Professor Mbangwana or his works (1.9). 

Section 2 should be the abstract proper including references if any and five key
words.

Abstracts will be evaluated as they come in and the result will be sent to the
e-mail address you provided. A formal invitation will be sent to you by surface
mail when your abstract has been accepted. 

After acceptance, the author or authors should write up the full paper, as they
will not have enough time to modify the paper substantially after presentation
at the conference. 

Oral presentations will be half hour talks, with twenty minutes for the
presentations and ten minutes for discussion. There will be a thirty minute
poster session.

Key Dates

Deadline for electronic submission of abstracts: March 31, 2008.
Notification of acceptance of papers: 7 days after receipt up to April 7, 2008.
Conference duration: June 5 - 6, 2008.
Deadline for submission of papers for publication: July 31, 2008.

Conference Fees

Conference fees cover the symposium, the academic honours and the Gala Night. A
tentative programme is provided below. 

Cameroon Residents:	
15000 CFA F before April 15, 2008	
20000 CFA F from April 16, 2008

Non Cameroon Residents: 
20000 (about US$ 40) before April 15, 2008	
25000 (about US$ 50) from April 16, 2008

Graduate Students:	
5000 CFA F before April 15, 2008	
7500 CFA F from April 16, 2008

Travel, Board & Lodging

Participants will be responsible for making their own arrangements for travel,
board and lodging. However, the conference organizers will furnish participants
with information on the availability of hotels in Yaounde, on request.

Visa Requirements

Potential participants are invited to contact the Cameroon Embassy in their
country of origin. A formal letter of invitation will be emailed and then posted
to them after acceptance of their papers.

the Faculty of Arts, Letters and Social Sciences, University of Yaounde I. We

Abstracts are invited for 20-minute Main Session presentations (plus 10 minutes
for discussion) on topics dealing with formal aspects of Slavic syntax,
semantics, morphology, phonology or psycholinguistics. 

Abstracts are also invited for a Special Session on Phonetics of the Slavic
languages. Here we seek submissions that explore formal linguistic issues
involving phonetics of Slavic languages. 

All abstracts should be no more than two pages in length (including data,
references, etc.), in 12-point type. All margins should be at least one inch
wide (2.5 cm). 

Abstract Submission: Authors are asked to submit their abstracts electronically
to fasl17 at yahoo.com as a .pdf attachment. 

In the body of the message please include the following information:
