The central goal of the Open Forum is to share and advance knowledge and
experience about standards, the technologies that build upon them, and
implementation experiences. Through plenary and track sessions, tutorials and
posters, the conference will update participants on existing standards, describe
implementations and operational systems, identify lessons learned, and outline
new standards research and directions to support emerging needs. Participants
should leave the conference knowing more about the use of standards to promote
data and semantic interoperability and the lessons learned from implementations. 
 
This Open Forum is the eleventh annual forum in a series of international
conferences about topics related to metadata, registries, semantics,
interoperability and related standards. It is a cross cutting metadata event - a
metadata bazaar, with many metadata aspects and perspectives represented. This
forum will focus on the interoperability of metadata and semantics in prototype
and operational systems. Sectors where information and data interchange and
re-use are critical, such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing,
statistics and the environment will be included.

The following are some of the standards that will be discussed:
 
Data Semantics:          

ISO/IEC 11179 (Metadata Registries) family of standards

Terminology:       
        
ISO 704 (Principles of Terminology); ISO 1087-1 (Vocabulary for   Terminology
Work); ISO 12620 (Data Categories) and other standards from ISO/TC 37 -
Terminology and Other Language and Content Resources

Interoperability:        
   
ISO/IEC 19763 (Framework for Metamodel Interoperability); ISO/IEC 20944
(Interoperability and Bindings)

Content & semantics:   

ISO standards, including Geographic Metadata (ISO 19115), Topic Maps (ISO/IEC
13250) W3C standards including RDF, OWL, and SKOS OMG standards including CWM,
SBVR, and ODM, and OASIS/ISO standards including the ebXML Registry - the ISO
15000 family of standards. 
 
The conference will gather together practitioners, standards developers,
software developers, and researchers from the public and private sectors to
demonstrate accomplishments and to discuss current and future efforts. Attendees
will have interests in metadata management and the use of international
standards relating to data and terminology, with some having specialties in
areas such as data search/retrieval, web search, and corporate data management.
