Meeting Description: 

Under the patronage of His Excellency, Dr. Ebrahim Bin Mohamed Janahi, President
of the University of Bahrain, the Department of English Language & Literature
(DELL) proudly announces its Second International Conference entitled "Language,
Literature & Translation in an Interdependent World" to be held in the Kingdom
of Bahrain from 8-10 April 2008.

This prestigious forum will bring together a galaxy of scholars at the
international, regional and national level to exchange knowledge, views and
experiences on the following themes:

1) Emergent technologies, language, literature and translation; 
2) Translation in an interconnected world; 
3) The integration of language and literature; and 
4) New directions in cultural and communication studies and their applications
in related domains. 

As we know, this interconnected world is in a state of flux due to advances in
science, technology, informatics, and telecommunications.  No doubt these
advances bring about change in people's discourses and methods of communication
around the globe.  In keeping with potential changes, we may have to duly
rethink our methodology in the domains of language, literature and translation,
among others.  The questions that seek answers at this point include:  How can
our teaching methodology cope with new modes of communication?  How can we teach
our students to appreciate and eventually translate other cultures?  How can we
help them avoid being misunderstood by native speakers of English?  Is the
conventional, rather canonical, methodology we have utilized for decades still
appropriate for our present discourse and the present needs of the market?  Do
changes in most spheres of life entail adapting our methodology so the outputs
of our schools and universities can become more efficient contributors to the
development of our countries?  Answers to these and other questions can no doubt
result in the betterment of the performance of teachers and  students alike and
can eventually meet the requirements of quality assurance not only in our
schools and universities but also in our societies at large.

We, therefore, look forward to your participation in our conference which will
hopefully bear fruit to our university and other academic and educational
institutions in the Arab World.

The conference organising committee cordially invites potential participants to
send in a 500-word abstract via e-mail addressed either to Dr. Abdulaziz Bulaila
or Dr. Abdul-Fattar Al-Jabr to englconf at arts.uob.bh no later than January 31, 2008.
