Institution/Organization: University of York
Department: Language and Linguistic Science
Web Address: http://www.york.ac.uk/depts/lang/

Level: PhD

Duties: Teaching

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics

Description:

The Department of Language and Linguistic Science at the University of York is
offering two different types of teaching studentships for PhD students.

The first is a new three-year studentship starting in October 2008, to be
awarded once every three years. The value of the studentship is a fees waiver at
the home/EU rate plus a stipend equivalent to the AHRC/ESRC maintenance grant
(approximately £12,600 in 07-08) per year, for each of the three years. The
recipient of this award will be required to undertake up to six hours per week
of teaching for the department during term time.

The second type is a three-year studentship to be awarded every year. The value
is a fees waiver at the home/EU rate for each of the three years. The recipient
of this award will be required to undertake up to six hours per week of teaching
or other duties during term time in year one; the nature of the work will depend
on the successful candidate's qualifications. In years two and three, the
recipient will be required to undertake up to six hours per week of teaching
during term time.

Applications for both studentships are invited from prospective PhD students in
any of the major research areas of the department: forensic speech science,
phonetics and phonology, psycholinguistics and language acquisition, semantics,
sociolinguistics, syntax. We welcome applicants with teaching experience; but
the studentships are open to all PhD applicants - home, EU and overseas -
whether or not you have taught before.

Application procedure: submit the following three documents electronically:

1. A cover letter stating that you are applying for the studentships and
specifying your research area. It will be assumed that you will accept either
the fees waiver + stipend award or the fees waiver only award unless you clearly
indicate otherwise. If you have had teaching experience, briefly describe it.
2. Your CV.
3. Your research proposal, 500-1000 words. This proposal may be the same as or
different in length from the proposal you submit to the University with your
application to the PhD programme.

Short-listed candidates will be interviewed, either in person or by telephone.

You must submit an application to the University of York PhD programme before or
at the same time as your studentship application. For details on the application
procedure to the University, see http://www.york.ac.uk/graduatestudy/applying/

Application Deadline: 30-Jun-2008
