Abstract:

This first major study in English of the novels of the Spanish Civil War is
based on an analysis of some eighty Spanish novels written in Spain and
abroad during the Franco period. The works are related to earlier examples
of war literature, such as the French novels of the First World War.
Professor Thomas examines the effects of propaganda in the early novels of
the Civil War as well as the disillusionment of later works, and the
effects of propaganda and censorship on literary style are also discussed.
Major writers covered include Max Aub, Francisco Ayala, Ramón Sender and
Camilo José Cela.
