Dear Subscribers,
Welcome to 2008'S Annual LINGUIST List Fund Drive. In my kickoff letter to you all
last year, I placed the focus on the good you can do by contributing to LINGUIST,
namely, supporting students from around the world who are working on degrees in
linguistics, some of whom might not otherwise be able to pursue their educations
without such help. But what about those of you who subscribe to the WIFM Principle?
'What's in it for me?' you say. This year, attention will be drawn to the ways we
have spent our time and with you in mind. It was a great year:
If you missed the ballyhoo, in July we unveiled our Events Calendar - a quick
reference to upcoming and concurrent conferences and calls for papers - early in
2007. The facility has been hugely popular. Bookmark the link:
http://linguistlist.org/callconf/eventcalendar.cfm and let us know what you think.
Quarterly hard-copy listings of job announcements became available Fall 2007. Jobs
are alphabetically listed by employer, cross-indexed by linguistic subfield and
subject language. Visit our Jobs Area (http://linguistlist.org/jobs/index.html)
and click on the Jobs Bulletin link. It's a good reference to see at a glance
who hires linguists, what jobs they are hired to do, and what education/training
expectations are. (Talk about a great year: we posted nearly 700 job announcements
in 2007).

instantly forward any issue we post. Just look for this near the top of every

Our Publications Team reached new arrangements with some of our supporting
publishers, bringing you free access to articles and article-related discussion
forums. You will hear from Maria Moreno-Rollins about the new Cambridge Extra
Magazine, and from Hannah Morales on the Wiley-Blackwell Compass. Randall Eggert,
our Book Reviews Manager, will tell you all about the new automated book review
selection and submission features developed this year.
During the summer of 2007 The LINGUIST List's new Internship Program hosted our
first summer interns: one of whom returned for a GA-ship after completing his
undergrad, the other having gone on to do a couple of year's work in Sierra Leone
before she returns to the U.S. to begin work on her Ph.D. Prospects for Summer
2008 and beyond have already begun correspondence. If you know someone who might
be interested in an internship, have them get in touch with us.
COMING IN 2008:
We know others of you out there who know of or have internship programs, and will
be working this year on a way to centralize and publicize that information - stay
tuned for those developments.
Currently in development, slated for partial release during this Fund Drive: The
Student Portal, with information, resources, tools, for the young person with a
potential interest in linguistics all the way through the person looking for a
postdoc position or other job.
Our current crop of staffers hail from Germany, Poland, China, Indonesia, Argentina,
England, India, Sweden, and the U.S. You will hear from many of them in this space
during Fund Drive. They worked hard all year in school, and worked hard all year
at LINGUIST to bring these new developments to you. We continually strive to evolve
in response to our community - to you. I hope you will consider making a donation
to The LINGUIST List this year, so that we can continue to provide you with the best,
most comprehensive online linguistics resource there is, and so fledglinguists
(why not?) can find shelter and support here while they learn. It's a good thing.
Thank you for your consideration,
Ann Sawyer
Managing Editor

the List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!
You can donate right now using our secure credit card form at
https://linguistlist.org/donation/donate/donate1.cfm
Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later. To do so, go to:
https://linguistlist.org/donation/pledge/pledge1.cfm
For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://linguistlist.org/donate.html
The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations
can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax
payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your
financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
