Dear LINGUIST Subscribers,
It's hard to believe that a little less than two years ago I didn't even know what
linguistics was. If someone had told me they studied linguistics, I probably would
have asked them the classic question, "So what language do you study?" Luckily,
my dad shared my passion for languages, and after he discovered linguistics, shared
that with me. Without this input I don't know where I would be today.
I've been working at LINGUIST for around a year now, and still find myself amazed
on a daily basis by the amount of content we have. I started at LINGUIST in the
summer of 2007, not even an undergraduate yet, with four courses at the University
of Michigan under my belt, and a thirst for knowledge that I think could only have
been taken care of by LINGUIST. It was an overwhelming environment to come into
just out of high school, I've learned more than I could have imagined about
linguistics, computers, and even grant-writing, experiences that I am incredibly
fortunate to have this early in my education.
I've been working on many teams here, including E-MELD, an area of LINGUIST with
recommendations for linguistic data preservation and collection, MULTITREE, a
project on creating a digital library of scholarly hypotheses about language
relationships and subgroupings, and Publications, posting TOC's, Journal Calls
for papers, and approving Journal submissions. Every time I'm posting submissions
I get sidetracked by the interesting content that the journals have, I can't help
but get ideas for projects that I would like to explore further.
It's amazing to me to think about what kind of service LINGUIST contributes to the
linguistics community. We have a system in which e-mails about job postings,
conferences, TOC's etc. are e-mailed to over 26,000 people at once, and this creates
a binding together of the community that has not been replicated in any other
field to date.
Working with intelligent linguists day-in and day-out has been an invaluable
experience, and I would like to ask you to please continue to make this possible.
We're a nonprofit organization, which has no way of continuing without your generous
contributions. Without your contributions LINGUIST could not continue to turn out
the amazing content that we do, year after year. We are willing to work as hard
as we can to ensure you continue to get this great service, but it's not possible
without you. Please continue to show you appreciate us by donating to the fund drive!
Thank you for all of your support,
Fatemeh Abdollahi

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations
can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax
payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your
financial advisor.
Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
