The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Job Location: Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom
Job Rank: Computational Linguist

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

Description:

Head of NLP

Description of role:

The SpinVox Automation department is responsible for reducing the human
effort involved in converting voice mails into text messages, using a
variety of signal processing, speech recognition and text processing
technologies.

We are now looking for a very experienced Computational Linguist to lead
our efforts in the natural language processing area. This is a hugely
challenging, but also a very rewarding role; the opportunities for applying
linguistic techniques are virtually limitless and even small improvements
in the algorithms for detecting and correcting potential conversion errors
translate into serious cost savings for the company. If you ever wished
your work would make a real difference, this is the place to be.

This position reports to the Head of Automation.

About You:

We are looking for a self-motivated and highly experienced Computational
Linguist, who enjoys working in the dynamic and flexible environment of a
successful and rapidly growing start-up.

Requirements:

- Grammars and parsing for spontaneous speech.
- Statistical and corpus-based methods.
- At least basic programming ability (shell scripts, Perl, awk).
- Relevant degree, PhD or equivalent experience.

Desirable:

- Spell-checkers, grammar checkers, auto correcting tools and predictive
typing.
- Experience with Automatic Speech Recognition technology.
- Knowledge about information extraction and machine learning techniques.
- Probabilistic Language Modelling experience.
- Experience managing large multi-lingual corpora and dictionaries.
- Experience with semantic networks.
- Multi-lingual.
- Have worked in a start-up environment.
- Strong leadership skills.

About SpinVox:

SpinVox is a next generation, network-independent mobile phone services
company. We launched the world's first voicemail-to-text service in October
2004, based on our proprietary voice-to-text system. Voicemails are
delivered as text messages, directly to the customer's mobile phone,
through the SpinVox integrated push technology platform. Our
voicemail-to-text service takes the voicemail, which had previously not
been modernised in years, right into the 21st century. Busy people can now
quickly see who called them and what the caller said, without having to
access complex voicemail systems.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such
can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c)
Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations
can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting
your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills
in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure
that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.
