Personal letter for Fund Drive

Since I joined the LINGUIST List crew only in mid-January 2008, I am 
not able to enumerate many achievements I have made as an LL crew member, 
but there are certainly numerous ways in which the LINGUIST List has 
influenced my life so far and I have ample reason to be grateful for all 
of them. 

I first heard of the LINGUIST List towards the end of my graduate studies 
in Germany. Some of my fellow students used the job portal to find work in 
the field of linguistics. In comparison to all the online job portals I 
have been using for several months, the one offered by the LINGUIST List 
is certainly the definitive source of information for linguists worldwide. 

In April 2007, the LINGUIST List advertised 3 summer internships and I 
decided to apply. I considered an internship at LL as a stepping stone to 
get into a linguistics job. Unfortunately, there was not enough time to 
apply for a visa, so Professor Aristar asked me to apply again in 2008. 
Since I was genuinely interested in working in a linguistics project somehow, 
I enquired whether I could join an LL project anyway and was assigned to work 
on the Uralic language family for the MultiTree project. During the 7 months 
in which was working on the project from my home in Germany, I received 
wonderful guidance from Susan Smith, the project team leader, and Professor 
Aristar, and I had a chance to learn about the history and typology of the 
Uralic languages. 

Professor Aristar tried to have me join the LL team for several months 
and even offered me a graduate assistantship if I would apply for a second 
M.A. at Eastern Michigan University (EMU). After almost 'miraculously' 
receiving my admission papers for the M.A. program in linguistics at EMU 
and for the Graduate Assistantship at the LINGUIST List on Christmas Eve 
2007, I got my visa in record time and joined the LL crew in person on 
January 14th, 2008. 

In the few weeks I have been an official LL crew member now, I have 
encountered nothing but appreciation for my work and kindness outside work. 
Many of the crew members have helped me in all the initial challenges of 
moving to a new country and I have never experienced such hospitality as 
Professor Aristar-Dry and Professor Aristar as well as Stephanie Morse 
and her husband have shown me.
