You are warmly invited to attend the International Symposium ''Challenges of European Integration'' - the section of English Language Teaching and Linguistics to be held on October 24-25, 2008 at Dimitrie Cantemir University of Targu Mures, Romania. 

The English Language Teaching and Linguistics section aims at bringing together teachers, postgraduate students and researchers to present state of the art developments, challenges and results in: EFL/ESL/ESP: Methodology, Curriculum Development, Materials Adaptation, Testing and Assessment; European Language Portofolio and Common European Framework of Reference; Teacher Training; SL/FL Acquisition; Bilingualism/Multilingualism; Pragmatics; Sociolinguistics; Discourse Analysis or any other field of Linguistics.

General information:
Each participant is entitled to submit maximum 2 papers (either as main author or co-author). Each paper should have an even number of pages (maximum 8) to be published in the ISBN Symposium volume at Risoprint Publishing House, Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Submission Guidelines:
Texts should be word edited in English (with a short abstract of about 100 words) or in Romanian (using diacritical marks) with a complex abstract in English/French. Papers will be B5 formatted, with left-right margins of 20mm, typed single-spaced. Please do not type on the back of the pages. The title should be typed in capitals, Font Arial Boldface, 14pt centered. Authors are typed at double space below the paper title, names being followed by scientific title and affiliation, 12 pt, italics. The abstract: typed at double space below the author/s (maximum 400 words), 10 pt. The main text is typed at single space below the abstract, font Arial, fully justified, 11 pt, single-spaced. Graphics, tables, and figures are numbered and labelled. Bibliographic references should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the paper. Entry format: last name, first name initial, (year), title (italics), Town: Publisher. Eg.: Beju, V. (2003), Social Insurance, Târgu-Mure?: Dimitrie Cantemir Publishing House.

Syntax under lexical rule: the role of clause-embedding predicates

The potential lexical impact of predicates on syntax is especially evident in the case of clause-embedding predicates. These may take the form of raising or control predicates (the latter showing predicate-specific control behaviour), question-embedding predicates, predicates that license embedded root clauses or other types of finite or infinite clauses. In addition, these predicates may impose specific restrictions on the morphosyntactic realization of the clausal argument (e.g. case marking, marking by adposition etc.). A non-exhaustive list of issues to be addressed in this workshop is the following:

- Are there systematic classes of clause-embedding predicates?
- Are these classes cross-linguistically stable?
- Are these classes diachronically stable?
- Are these classes defined in syntactic or semantic terms?
- Are there exceptional or idiosyncratic predicates?
- Are there systematic differences between languages that display a big inventory of clause-embedding predicates and languages with a small inventory?
- Which properties of clause-embedding predicates are affected in language contact and change?
- Are there processing differences between various clause-embedding predicates?

We invite contributions from all theoretical approaches, from historical linguistics, psycholinguistics, and language contact studies.

Abstracts are invited for a 30-minute presentation followed by a 15-minute question period. 

An author may submit at most one single and one joint abstract. Abstracts should be at most 2 pages in 12-point font with 2.5 cm margins, including data and references. Authors are requested to submit two copies of their abstract, one with their name and one anonymous. Abstracts must be submitted as a pdf attachment to the email listed above. The names of the files should be surname-named.pdf and surname-anon.pdf.

The body of the e-mail should contain the following information:
