Dear Subscribers,

My name is Benjamin Cool and I love working at The LINGUIST List.  While I was 
finishing up my Bachelors degree in Computer Science at Eastern Michigan University, 
I was introduced to LINGUIST, which played an integral role in my decision to 
continue my graduate studies in CS fields. I am currently studying Artificial 
Intelligence at EMU and have been taking classes that are leading me toward 
Bioinformatics.  My job at LINGUIST includes working on projects such as LL-Map, 
an abstract submission and reviewer assignment software, LINGUIST List Jobs 
submission pages, the new LINGUIST List Jobs Bulletin, as well as many, many other
enriching projects that come up along the way such as Fund Drive.

My work on the LL-Map project allows me to test my programming skills for the simple 
fact that it involves many different programming languages that each plays an 
important and specific role in the project. Learning new technologies like WMS, 
IMS, SDE, ESRI, Google Maps API and ExtJS: has helped expand my impression of what 
is possible on the web.  LL-Map has helped me build invaluable team working skills 
and has build camaraderie between the members of the team.

The new Jobs Bulletin is a combination of new programming language technologies 
and database design.  The Bulletin Generator allows a crew member to generate a 
new PDF version of all current job postings in the LINGUIST database to be made 
available for free download in the jobs section of the LINGUIST site.  The Jobs 
Bulletin uses Cold fusion with a formatting heuristic, XML, XSLT and XSL-FO to 
generate the PDF. This project was fun and exciting to work on, and knowledge of 
these languages and tools are valuable assets for any web application developer.

Working with The LINGUIST List has given me the opportunity to positively progress 
as a programmer, and has led me to expand my horizons and use technologies and 
languages (programming) that I would otherwise never have thought to implement and 
in some cases: that I had never heard of.  It always amazes me when: after working 
at the LINGUIST List for over a year; I hear about a service that LINGUIST provides 
that I have never heard of before.  I encourage anyone on the LINGUIST site to 
browse around a bit and be adventurous: it may provide a refreshing surprise to 
discover a "new" service that The LINGUIST List provides.
