Dear Subscribers,

As a first year MA student in my second year at LINGUIST, I've learned what 'sink 
or swim' means.  I began my work here during my undergraduate program as the 
Financial Editor without possessing any prior knowledge of accounting.  With a 
little training and more than a little fear, I learned that in order to succeed 
here, you have to be motivated, to plunge headfirst into your tasks.  That's one 
thing that everyone who works here can attest to - the steep learning curve.  You 
learn as you go.  Sink or swim, except that no one ever seems to sink.  We rise 
to the top.

Now, swimming along in my second year here, I've co-coordinated the 2007 Fund Drive, 
co-organized the 14th SILS meeting, am responsible for posting academic jobs and 
student supports, and have attended my first LSA Meeting.  Posting jobs (we posted 
over 600 in 2007!) is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the field's 
sub-disciplines and interact more with the linguistics community.  I'm also involved 
in the MultiTree project that is building a digital library of language family 
hypotheses.  Having worked on hypotheses about Austronesian, Indo-European, and 
some of the indigenous languages of the Americas, I now know more about the languages 
of the world than I would ever learn sitting in a classroom.  Recently, I have 
been given the privilege of being appointed team leader of grant writing.  Although 
I've not yet participated in grant writing, I know that in a few months time, I'll 
possess the skills I need to write grant proposals with relative ease.  

Being given the opportunity to handle all of this responsibility and learn so much 
gives me confidence that when I apply to a PhD program, I will be capable of handling 
whatever comes my way.  Not only that, but I get to spend my time around so many 
other diligent GAs; like a family, we're all in this together.  I am excited to 
spend another year here!  We LINGUIST GAs would not have the opportunities that 
we do without your donations, so thank you to those of you who have supported us
