Meeting Description: 

While papers on all aspects of onomastics are welcome (e.g., personal names,
place names, names in literature, brand names, etc.), ICOS 2008 will have the
following central theme: Names in Contact: Names in a Multi-Lingual,
Multi-Cultural, Multi-Ethnic World 

In addition to the regular classes on major aspects of onomastics, there will
also be special sessions on the following special topics:

Alpine and Mountain Names 
(organized by Isolde Hausner)

Jewish Names 
(organized by Aaron Demsky)

Proper Names in Social Encounters: Analyzing Spoken Language 
(organized by Terhi Ainiala & Elwys de Stefani)

Toponymy within Cartographic Language 
(organized by Yaives Ferland)

Aboriginal/Indigenous/First Nations Naming 
(organized by Kaisa Rautio Helander)

''Not an Empty Wasteland. Renaming in the Canadian Arctic: Names, Language, and
Orthography Reflecting Centuries of Inuit Land Use and Occupancy''.

In addition to the scholarly program, there will be an excursion on Wednesday,
August 20, to Niagara Falls and a winery. (The Niagara Region is one of the most
important wine growing regions in Canada.) There will be receptions on Monday
evening (sponsored by York University) and Tuesday evening (sponsored by the
Canadian Society for the Study of Names / Société canadienne d'onomastique), as
well as a banquet on Thursday evening, preceded by a reception.

Accommodations will be in residences on campus, in the hotel on campus, and in
good nearby hotels.

There will be free internet access on campus throughout the Congress.

The Congress fees (inclusive of the receptions and banquet, but not the
Wednesday excursion) are $CDN 185 (which is currently approximately €126, $US
185, £90 for members. The fee for non-members will be $CDN 215.). Accompanying
persons (i.e., using internet, attending social events, including the banquet,
coffee breaks, opening and closing sessions, but not the scientific programme)
and students will pay half the otherwise-applicable price. (The reduction for
students is covered by a grant allocated by the ICOS Board of Directors.) Please
note that the fee is set in Canadian dollars, as are all our costs, and the
Canadian dollar has recently risen rapidly in value against all major world
currencies, most especially the US dollar. Thus, the anticipated congress fees
in other currencies have risen compared to those anticipated in the first circular.

Please note that the Congress can not support any congress participants
financially. We also do not have any grants, either from the Canadian government
or York University, for which congress participants can apply.
